Dreaming of Samoa

Dear Editor,

My friend just returned from Rarotonga yesterday and he was sharing all his great vacation adventures with me today.

He told me about all the different denominations of churches everywhere, he told me how the people were so friendly and non aggressive, he told me about snorkeling in the warm, blue water, he told me all about not being able to purchase land in Rarotonga if you are a foreigner, he told me about the buses, beaches, and palm trees.

He was so excited about his trip and his stories reminded me so much of Samoa that I was very homesick for Samoa.

Then I asked him about the children. I asked him if there were children begging all over like in Samoa?

He looked very confused and said, “no, I didn’t see any evidence of such poverty, and if I had of I would not want to go back.”

It’s too bad that another Polynesian island with a similar history and a similar economy has such a different outcome for its poor children. I’m so sad to read the story about the street vendors at Vaitele.
