Police investigate death of Salelologa baby

The Ministry of Police are investigating the death of a baby from Salelologa, Savai’i.

The passing of the baby was reported to the Tuasivi Police last Friday by staff from the Malietoa Tanumafili II hospital.

“On Friday, 11 January 2019 at 1:30pm, Tuasivi Police received a call from the Malietoa Tanumafili II hospital regarding a child who has been admitted and is declared dead on arrival.”

“Police responded and noted that the deceased was a two-years-and-11-months old female from Salelologa.” 

“Police investigations are continuing and the matter will be referred to the Coroner for coronial inquiries,” the Police said in a statement. 

Other matters which were brought to the attention of the Police include incest, assault with intent to rob, sexual violation, and traffic infringements.

On the night of January 7 the Police reported getting a complaint alleging sexual violation by a male of Auala and Sataua. 

“A 56-year-old female of Sataua lodged a complaint against a 53-year-old male of Auala and Sataua for sexual violation. The victim is a 21-year-old and is the niece of the complainant.”

“As a result of the sexual violation, the victim was admitted four times at the Sataua District hospital. This male has since been charged with sexual violation and he has been remanded in custody to await Court mention scheduled for 14 January 2019.”  In another sexual offense case, Last Friday a 37-year-old female of Nu’usuatia-Safata lodged a complaint against a 41-year-old male of Lufilufi at around 7.30pm, alleging sexual acts against his two daughters aged 15 and 16 years of age between 2016 and 2017. 

“The defendant has been charged with Incest and he is scheduled to appear in Court on 28 January 2019 and he has been remanded in custody,” the Police said. 

There was also a case of assault with intent to rob last Saturday with the Police advising that the complainant was a 22-year-old female. 

“A 22-year-old female from Falelauniu-tai notified Police in regards to an unknown male, who came into their shop and assaulted their cashier before he took off with cash from the shop. 

“The Police investigation led to the arrest of a 21-year-old male from Vaitele and Foga, Savai’i. He has since been charged with assault with intent to rob, and has been remanded in custody to await court mention scheduled for 22 January 2019,” added the Police.
