A family in Iva, Savai’i, has been left without a home after a fire ripped through their house on Friday.

The fire reduced the family’s home and properties into a pile of rubble.

According to an eyewitness, who wished not to be named, the incident occurred at 12:30pm on Friday.

It happened while the village was busy with a saofa’i (title bestowment) which was attended by hundreds of people.

“The fire started from children burning rubbish, it spread to the kitchen and from there it was not possible to control it,” he said.

“It also destroyed two of the family’s vehicles.”

The eyewitness added that the Fire and Emergency Services Authority in Savai’i responded quickly but they could do nothing as flames consumed the property.

“It was sad to watch but it was good that no one was injured or died,” he said.

An official from the Fire and Emergency Services said the fire started from the kitchen where children had been frying some food.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire.

“We are still urging the general public to be more cautions and to keep an eye on children at all times,” the official said.
