Best part about Samoa is people’s friendly nature

Australian couple, Louise and Joseph Ousby, couldn’t have been happier with their decision to visit Samoa.

Charmed by the beauty of the island and the friendliness of its people, the elderly couple said they’ve thoroughly enjoyed their trip.

On their first day in Samoa, they tried walking into town but ended up renting a car because of the heat and despite the rain the following days, they drove around the island and enjoyed swimming at the To Sua Ocean Trench.

“What we discovered was that the trench was well managed, we got there and they had toilets, facilities and places where we can sit and the attraction itself too,” Joseph said to the Dear Tourist team.

“There was also a small shop nearby where we could buy ice cream and that meant, as a tourist, we were catered for and so that was really good.”

This is the couple’s second pre-Christmas holiday of the year as they were in China before they arrived, and said they’ve had such a busy year with Joseph being a mathematics teacher and Louise teaching pottery.

“I’ll tell you what I love, is that Samoan people are so friendly and so kind, that’s what I think is the best attraction in Samoa,” Louise said.

“You can tell the people don’t have much but they’re still such nice generous people. Also it’s just a beautiful place.”

There were a few things the couple noticed during their drive around the island, which could be improved.

“When we tried to navigate our way, we couldn’t get a proper map. We got a map from the Information Centre but even so, the roads aren’t signed, it’s like a puzzle but it was okay.

“Yesterday (Wednesday) we went driving and there were no public toilets and nowhere could we see a place where we could stop by because not even petrol stations had public bathrooms so we ended up driving back to the hotel,” the couple said.

They also mentioned how attractions lacked obvious signs to navigate them through the island.

“Things did not have sign posts either. When we went to the trench I drove straight past the trench sign to start with. It was only when we stopped to talk to somebody, which is a good thing because they were very friendly,” said Joseph.

“Other times, we just figured it out, I mean that’s one of the charms of this place, it’s good that it’s not overrun with tour companies and big signs,” Louise added.

“Another thing about Samoa is you’re not very far from anywhere.”

Louise and Joseph stayed at Taumeasina Island Resort for their six day trip.
