After a memorable battle against his opponents, Selina from Moamoa has been crowned the 2016 Queen of Lip Sync at the annual Diva Competition.

The event was held at Maliu Mai Bar at Fugalei. The bar also hosts the weekly diva shows.

Four contestants competed against each other in three rounds, including many hit songs by their personal favourite divas and theatrical storylines about lost love, trust and girl-power.

The amusing hosts not only introduced the participants, but also made sure the audience was enjoying their performances.

The candidates were judged by fa‘afafines who have all gained performance experience in several diva shows in Australia, New Zealand and other countries all around the world.

One of them took the stage before the winner was announced and impressed the crowd.

Last year’s queen also performed a series of songs, so the competing divas definitely learned by watching two experts.

The divas gave their heart and soul with powerful songs like Whitney Houston’s One Moment in Time or Little Mix’s Secret Love Song, but also showed off their dancing skills on stage to Taylor Swift’s Picture To Burn.

But the Lip Sync was not only on international, well-known songs. During musical breaks, the divas acted dramatic storylines out, such as a fight between husband and wife over an affair.

Selina presented the plot with humorous facial expressions and gestures which resulted in many laughs from the audience.

In every round the fa’afafines beamed with new make-up, hair and elegant dresses.

Two contestants impressed with full physical involvement and took off their shirts during their hip-hop performance. The crowd could have not cheered louder.

Yet, Selina who stayed fully clothed was able to win the judges over and secured the crown of Queen of Lip Sync 2016.

The excited audience, which enjoyed delicious food served by Maliu Mai’s staff, included fellow fa’afafines, supporters, as well as families, foreigners and volunteers.
