Mother needs help with water tank

A mother of six is appealing to the public for a water tank.

Fualau Menasio Leulumoega Uta is amongst the many families in Samoa that have the same problem: the lack of a consistent supply of water.

The 36-year-old mother lives with her husband. They have six children and four are with them, while the rest lives overseas.

“We live a very simple life with our vegetables and plantation and I am not complaining in that area.”

However, she pointed out to the Village Voice yesterday, her main frustration is water scarcity.

“My oldest daughter is 19… and that is also the number of years we have been living without having any access to government water.

“We have a water tank gifted to us by the Red Cross Society but it doesn’t cover all of our everyday necessities.”

“One water tank is not enough for our family,” said the mother.

“We need to have our own water supply -- and we have requested to the government for water connection -- and we are still waiting.

“I want my children to live healthy lives and I don’t see how we can do that when we only have one water tank and no stable water supply.

“The lack of water is the one issue the government should prioritise.

“If we can’t have a water tank from them then, the least they can do is put in the effort in connecting water for us,” she said.

Fetching water is one of the challenges the mother faces.

“We depend on the rain to fill up our water tanks and so when it doesn’t rain at all, I reach out to my uncle who lives in Vaitele Uta to help us.

“We get our water from him and we use his car to transport the gallons to fill up our water tank.

“We are heading towards dry season and we will need water every day, and because I know it will take a miracle for the government to connect our family to their water…. I am asking anyone who can help us by providing a water tank for my family.”
