Pride in school and giving back

Once a St. Mary’s student, always a St. Mary’s student.

In this spirit, students of St. Mary’s Class of 1970 returned to the school yesterday, bearing gifts.

Among the gifts were two projectors and other vital learning tools, valued at $3,000.

Class representative, Letuimanu'asina Dr Emma Kruse-Va'ai, said they were happy to be back on their old stomping ground, this time as part of a mission to help grow education at St. Mary’s.

The donation, she said, is their way of acknowledging how the school helped to nurture them to be the successful women they are today.

“St. Mary’s has a long history in educating women to serve Samoa, their families and communities,” said Letuimanu'asina.

“So wherever we go, we have that spirit of service.”

Letuimanu'asina added that yesterday’s event is all part of education.

“It’s good to always remember to have the spirit of giving back to the school,” she said. “We are very thankful that wherever the girls go, they always remember to come back and give to Samoa and to the school.

One of the prefects, Gebra Leiu, acknowledged the kind gesture from the former students.

“It is a privilege to stand on behalf of Sister Pele, the staff and the school of St. Mary’s College, to express our heartfelt gratitude for what your class have contributed to the school,” she said.

“You have set a very good example for us, and for more generations to come, by coming here today and being part of this special day.

“Thank you for being thoughtful and still embracing our ‘agaga Kerisiano.’"

Over the years, St. Mary’s has maintained its commitment to providing a high standard of education.

St. Mary’s School opened at Savalalo in 1956, and by 1958, they decided to shift the school to Vaimoso.

In 1969, the first new school building was built and in the same year, Peace Corps volunteers started to teach at St Mary’s College.
