Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malieegaoi has congratulated fine mat weavers from across the nation.

In doing so, he has also encouraged them to continue to do their best to revive the weaving of the true and original Samoan fine mats.

Tuilaepa was speaking during the Showcasing of Fine mats in front of the Government building last week.

The project is a Government initiative which started 15 years ago.

The three main objectives for this program are:

• Revive the weaving of the true and original Samoan fine mats to sustain the traditional skills and knowledge on its production for younger generations and maintain its authenticity;

• Increase the production of this fine mat as the means of alleviating and reducing unnecessary burdens to our faasamoa; and

• Improve and increase the household income of weavers through economic benefits arising from the Samoan fine mats.

“We have achieved all these objectives over the years and I am glad to announce that this program will continue as it remains as the only one of its kind, where Government rewarded weavers, yet the fine mats remain as the weavers’ own property to sell or use for whatever means,” Tuilaepa said.

“So long as the traditions and the culture of Samoa which centre on the fine mat, continue to remain strong, alive and well, this programme must and should continue to eternity.

“Government has committed over close to 1.5 million in the last two years for this program. It shall continue, with proper reviews to be carried out later in the year, while we anticipate the using of electronic online avenues to expand it.”
