A Government delegation led by the Minister of Works, Transport and Infrastructure, Papali’itele Niko Lee Hang, travelled to Tokyo, Japan to attend the bid opening, negotiation, contract award and contract signing for the Reconstruction of Vaisigano Bridge Project.

The Technical Bids for the Project were opened on 26 February 2018, and Financial Bids for those who passed the technical evaluation were opened on 1 March 2018.

At the conclusion of the bidding process, the successful bidder was Konoike Construction Co. Ltd.  On the 7th March 2018, the contract was awarded to Konoike Construction Co. Ltd and the contract was signed accordingly.

The $44million project for the design, supervision and construction works is funded by Japan under a Grant Agreement with Samoa, channelled through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (“J.I.C.A.”).

The Samoa Delegation met with the Senior Vice President and Senior members of J.I.C.A. at J.I.C.A. Headquarters to discuss the Project as well as possible future projects.

For the Project, the L.T.A. is the implementing agency, and Central Consultants Inc, Japan, the Design and Supervision Consultant.

The project is set to start next month in April 2018 and is timed for 40 months, mostly with the actual construction.

Furthermore, the new Vaisigano Bridge when completed will be the same length as the old bridge, which will be removed once the new bridge has been completed.

There will be two lanes going on each direction, with the provisions of seaside and upstream retaining walls, footpaths on both sides of the bridge and installation of street lighting.

Once it is in place, the bridge is expected to be a secure, safe and disaster-resistant highway that will strengthen the transportation capacity in the country.
