As recovery efforts from Cyclone Gita are well underway in Samoa, Digicel is working round the clock to get critical communication services back up and running so that emergency services, families and friends can connect.
About two-thirds of the communication has been restored in Upolu and Savai’i and work is ongoing at pace to restore all services in Samoa.
Additionally, public charging stations have been deployed across multiple sites so that customers can power their phones and connect with families and friends at home and abroad.
Locations of charging stations are being communicated via the Digicel Samoa Facebook page and via the radio stations.
Relief supplies were packed by staff and are being distributed to heavily affected areas.
Digicel Samoa C.E.O, Farid Mohammed led the distribution effort, visiting some of the worst hit areas.
“We have put together more than 300 cyclone relief packs of basic food ration supplies which includes drinking water, tinned food, biscuits, noodles and rice.
These supplies will help to provide for much needed items for the most vulnerable people affected by the Tropical Cyclone Gita,” he said.
“This is part of our corporate social responsibility and we come to exercise this phase of care especially in this time of need and share in the pain with our beloved Samoan brothers and sisters. Our prayers are with them and we wish them best as they strive to recover from this devastation.
Digicel Regional C.E.O. Pacific, Colin Stone, said: “Our thoughts are with the people of Samoa and we are deeply saddened by and concerned about the destruction caused by Tropical Cyclone Gita that hit Samoa last Saturday.
While there is considerable damage across the islands our immediate priority and focus is to ensure that communications services are fully restored as quickly as possible so that people can connect with their friends and loved ones.”
