Maria Ioane shed tears of joy and happiness when she was announced the 2017 Dux of Vaivase Primary School.

The ceremony was witnessed by the young girl’s family members and friends who gathered at the school’s hall to celebrate her achievements.

Maria comes from a family whose life is dedicated to serving God.

Her parents, Ioane Iosefo and Tamalii Iosefo look after the Vaoala Catholic Church and they couldn’t have been more proud of their youngest daughter’s achievements.

“I give glory to the Heavenly Father for this achievement because without him I know I would not have achieved it,” Maria said.

“I also want to thank my parents for supporting me throughout this whole year especially to my mother. She always scolds me when I do not do my studies, however I am so happy that I achieved it this year. This is for them.”

Her mother Tamalii said she was happy that her daughter’s hard work had been paid off. The 13-year-old wants to become a doctor in the future.

“I want to become a doctor to help our people because I hear from the hospital that there are not enough doctors working in hospitals.”

Maria topped in Mathematics, Social Science, English and Samoan Studies. She hopes to attend Samoa College next year.
