“Your choice, your future.”
That is the mantra behind the first Open Day hosted by the Samoa National Health Services (N.H.S) this week. The Open day aimed at showcasing the services provided by the N.H.S.
It was also an opportunity for the youth to learn about the various services provided by the N.H.S so they can choose from for future career paths.
“The two main goals are to showcase the service we provide and what we offer. Because with the new hospitals and the new changes at N.H.S,” said Aharoni Tinai-Williams, the Chairman of the N.H.S Open Day Committee
“The other thing is people think that when it comes to health it’s just the nurses and doctors. But there are other people included as well like the lab technicians, dental therapists, dental technicians and pharmacists, and others as well.”
“Secondly we are looking at inviting the students, because we know that some of them are looking at taking some of these services as career paths in the future. This is an opportunity for them to see and observe the different services that we have and offer so that they can pursue it in the future.”
He went on to say that the great need for more people to work at the health sector is another reason the initiative. Nevertheless, he also added that they are looking at hosting another open day next year and it will be bigger than the one this year. “We need more people to work with us. For example, we are in need of pharmacists at the moment.”
“The open day this is just a low key showcase but we are looking at having it again next year. This is only for National Health Service.”
“The initiative came from the Directors. This is new, but with anything in life you have to start somewhere. But for next year, we are now looking at having it during the schools time.”
“We have booths for blood donors and other things as well.”
“Our main purpose is to get more students to come and pursue professions in health. It’s obvious that we need more people to work and help out with the work here at the Health Service.”
