TEAM HAPPY FEET: Masters’ category winners at the finish at Hotel Tanoa Tusitala consisting of Oscar Netzler, Paul Bolger, Michael Rasmussen, Lufi Rasmussen and Docs Lama Tafunai and Ben Matalavea.

JICA 1 team Samurai Iapani was outstanding in winning the 8th Samoa Perimeter Relay. The 104km relay race from Sinalei Reef resort in Siumu to Tanoa Tusitala Hotel attracted 11 teams this year. The two JICA teams finished in the top half of the race.

Samurai had some top runners in Kuniyoshi Watanabe and Yusuke Yokoyama. Watanabe won the Lalomanu Half Marathon last year and Yokoyama finished second at Lalomanu this year. Apia Hash House Harriers also had two mixed teams in the event.

Top Hash team Spaded Dogs finished 2nd overall in a time of 9:19:47 and second team Rundamentals finished 8th in 10:56:25.

The scattered start to the race allows for all teams to finish within 2hrs of each other. It also meant a much earlier start for some. Like Ford Power Rangers who started at 2.30am. Samurai start was at 7am. Rangers completed their very first relay in just over 12hrs, a tough ask for the new runners that included Ford employees Simon Fruean and Clint Keil.

The Relay had an evenly split in gender participation with 35 men and 31 women runners.

The other winners are Spaded Dogs (Team Team) and Happy Feet who won the Masters category. Masters is the category of runners over 40yrs of age.

This is the fourth year of running the relay for Happy Feet, a team that is fairly well intact since it entered the category.

This year it was made up of regulars Michael and Lufilufi Rasmussen and the two docs, Ben Matalavea and Lama Tafunai. Oscar Netzler and Paul Bolger were the other two runners for Happy Feet.
