White Sunday started with a spectacular rainfall in the morning causing many to rethink their beach plans.

However, walking into Faimafili Resort and looking out onto the beach you wouldn’t think that there had been a downpour as tourists enjoyed their Sunday feast with a view and were looking forward to taking a dip later in the afternoon.

Friends, Karina, Hannah and Serina had just finished their lunch when Dear Tourist sat down with them. We found that the girls were all here as volunteers. Signing up with Projects Abroad was a way for them to see the world and in particular the Pacific.

Karina from Germany has been here for three weeks and was a little sad to be leaving in a week.

“I’ve been here for three weeks now and I’m leaving next week,” she said.

“I like it here and I’m sad I’m leaving next Thursday. Samoa is so far away from Germany, it’s like 25 hours to get here – it’s crazy. I really like it.”

Karina preferred to discover Samoa on her terms.

“I came here with Projects Abroad and we were given some information about Samoa but I didn’t want to research too much because I wanted to discover it for myself when I got here so I know where Samoa is and how the people actually are. I wanted to find out by myself.

“My first impression when I got here was – it’s hot. Even when I landed at 6am, it was so hot. The 50-minute ride to Alafua, I was looking out the window and I was like ok wow, this is Samoa.”

Being here for a few weeks, she has learnt to take everything with a grain of salt.

“In Samoa, I’ve learnt that maybe it’s good to be more laid back, be more relaxed about somethings because in Germany we are a real structured place so I like that everything is on time but here it’s not always like that, so I’ll tell people in Germany to be a bit more chilled about everything when they come here. I know it sounds cheesy but figured here it all depends on the weather. In Germany when it’s winter/autumn we have to be very fast to do things and just move all the time. But here it’s too hot to move that fast!”

Serina from Switzerland said: “One of the highlights for me is coming to places like Famafili resort and hanging by the beach and the sea. They are all so very friendly here and everyone says hi when you are walking down the street. My favorite thing here are the beaches, they are so beautiful.”

Hannah of Canada added: “I love the open fales it’s such a good idea. It’s really cool to see that everyone can come and hang out outside the fale and you might do your devotions under a tree. I’ve been in Samoa for one month.  The fruit here is so much sweeter and so much better, I love it. Eating mangoes or pineapples is going to be so boring when I get back home.”
