Mother dreams of her children succeeding

Parents who love their children will do anything and everything to ensure their little angels have everything they need, including food, shelter and a good education.

Elena Sautupe from the village of Solosolo-Uta is no exception.

But things could be better.

“It has been thirty years since we haven’t had electricity at home,” she tells the Village Voice team.

“But we still manage to live every day.  Having no power is not a problem to us. What we have to use is flash lights.”

The family’s income is from selling seafood.

“We spend every penny we earn solely on our children. I want them to have everything they need, and for them to live a happy life.”

“My husband and I are ready to make the greatest sacrifices for our children.”

Elena knows this can only be achieved through hard work.

“I do this everyday to feed my children.”

“I can’t stay at home when I don’t know where to get money for them for the next day.”

Elena’s one and only supporter is her husband.

“I can’t do the work alone. My husband goes fishing too for money. We deliver it around but the money we earn is just not enough.”

“Some of my children are working as fruit pickers overseas and they are trying to help us.”

“The father also develops his plantation but it’s mostly for food.”

Elena added: “I dream of a better, more empowering life for my children.”

“I want them to know that education is the greatest tool. If they do well in school they wouldn’t be facing the same situation we are in.”
