Mother’s day means different things to different people.

While others engage in all our spending and shopping sprees, for some mothers they prefer it simple.

For 63 year-old mother, Manino Malu, from the village of Faleasiu, her family is all that matters in days like these.

The Village Voice caught up with Mrs. Malu when she was in her food stall.

“As you can see, I’m making coffee and sell whatever I can to get some money,” she told the Village Voice.

“We need some money to buy something for our to’ana’i tomorrow.”

“We usually get our money from selling fish but since it’s a bad weather day, we cannot risk the father of the family going off fishing when the weather doesn’t look too good.”

Mrs. Malu is a mother to four children and she doesn’t mind working because she said her job is to help out her husband when things don’t go well.

“I’m not the type of mother who always wishes for things she cannot afford or buy things we cannot afford.”

“You know I’m okay with wearing old clothes to church tomorrow as long as we have something to eat.”

“Because the point is, whether you’re wearing something new or not, it’s basically a day to celebrate life and to celebrate the importance of mothers.”

“It’s a day to celebrate life with our families because we never know what God’s will is for the next day.” 

 “For me, the only thing I want for Mothers Day is for my children to continue on obeying and listening to us and it makes our job as parents easier as well.”

“I also pray for all mothers to have the strength to carry on with their duties in this lifetime and to live longer so they can spend more time with their families and the ones they love.”
