Parker’s winning gloves up for grabs at Fight for Marist

14 February 2016, 12:00AM

The pair of gloves comes with inspirational messages written all over it by Samoa’s undisputed.

What’s written on Lupesoliai Joseph Parker’s winning gloves will only be revealed on the night of the upcoming Vailima Fight For Marist.

Lupesoliai’s gloves were donated intentionally to see the sport of boxing in Samoa develop and grow.

Other than Lupesoli’ai’s winning gloves, the guests will get to own an English rugby jersey donated by the first ever Samoan to play for England’s national rugby team, Manu Tuilagi.  From humble beginnings to being the only Samoan earning over GBP$1 million per year in England.

Tuilagi’s 2011 Rugby World Cup jersey has been autographed and donated to the Vailima Fight For Marist.

Rugby fanatics will have more jerseys on auction from famous clubs like Toulon donated by Census Johnston and Manu Samoa rugby jerseys.

Having such memorabilia will hopefully raise the profile of the Vailima Fight for Marist event and raise much needed funds for Marist St Joseph’s Sports Club for its charitable activities and to revive its boxing ring.

The auctioneer for the night will be Geoffrey Clarke whose father (Herbert Clarke) was one of the founding members of Marist St Joseph’s Sports Club.

The main bout at the Vailima Fight for Marist will be between Samoa’s Petelo Matagi and Tonga’s Kanongataa Atonio.

Petelo has already qualified for the Rio Olympics. Kanongataa is Tonga’s Elite Champion and Olympic Qualifier Asian Games 2016. He is scheduled to arrive this Sunday with his coach.

Also to be featured at the fight will be the finals for all weight divisions of the National Youth Amateur Boxing Competition. In between the amateur bouts will be corporate bouts involving lawyers, accountants, golden oldies, big boys, faafafine, rugby players and others.

Many members of both the legal and accounting fraternities are planning to turn up to support their boxers. Senior prosecutor, Fetuliai ‘Star’ Lagaaia of the Office of the Attorney General/National Prosecution Office is looking forward to fighting accountant Norris Mitchell of the Office of the Controller and Auditor General.

A senior member of one of the accounting firms had this to say about the fight, ‘Accountants have experience in forecasting numbers thus our prediction skills enable us to calculate the lawyers’ next move. Boxing is a numbers game so accountants are surely superior over the lawyers here. Also, boxing involve real skill  - something lawyers simply cannot talk their way out of in order to win.’

The Vailima Fight for Marist event will take place on Wednesday 17th February 2016 at Gym One, Tuanaimato.

Doors will open at 6:30pm. Corporate tables (of 8) cost $1,200 each (free food and Vailima beer). Corporate tickets are available at SSAB Megastore. General admission to be paid at the door is $5 per person. For more information, please contact Boxing Tournament Coordinator, Tavui Mike Lemisio ph 7628769 or President, Laulu Henry Taefu ph 7585450 of Marist St Joseph’s Sports Club, Inc.
