Talaitupu Fau, from the village of Nofoalii, is adamant that sewing is the best job in the world. 

Talaitupu says that if you are a mother who wants to earn money without it getting in the way of your daily duties, then sewing is for you.

Not only is it good money, it’s less stress, and you are your own boss.

“The one thing I want to say to all the mothers out there is that sewing is a very useful way to use your time,” Talaitupu told the Village Voice.

“Sewing is a very good way to make money and you can fill your pockets quick. As a tailor you can just sit around peacefully and sew clothes for your customers, your family and yourself.”

“If you are a stay-at-home mom then you can take care of your children while working. There’s no stress and you can get a lot from it. You can get money anytime.”

Talaitupu says that sewing has given her the opportunity to earn money and take care of things around the house.

“Sewing has helped my family a lot,” she said.

“I can do all sorts of chores here at home before I start sewing. I wake up in the morning, get my children ready for school, when the family clears out of the house I start cleaning up, then I cook food for everyone’s return.”

“After I am done with everything then I sit down peacefully and continue my work with sewing. That’s how simple it is.”

“You are your own boss and you can rest or do other things whenever you want.”

But there are a few problems with being a village tailor.

“Right now I am getting some things ready for the church this coming Sunday,” Talaitupu said.

“One of the problems I face is when I get sick. It seems like there is a lot of things to do when you get sick and there’s not much you can do.”

“But that’s why this work is good. You can take a break whenever you feel that you can’t work. Everything you do depends entirely on you.”

“Another problem would be the equipment. When my sewing machine is broken then I can’t do anything about it.”

And nothing feels better than working on your own terms.

“Like I mentioned before, the biggest perks with this is resting whenever you want to,” Talaitupu said.

“A lot of times I find myself feeling really drained from things going on in the family and with the children giving me a headache, so I just lay down and rest.”

“Those who have jobs can’t do that. I prefer earning money like this than any other type of work.”
