Grandfather speaks out against abortion

Abortion is an evil act. It is not the answer to the problem of teenage pregnancies.

That’s the opinion of 65-year-old father and grandfather, Ma’ilata Fiasili, of Le’auva’a.

Speaking to the Village Voice team, the elder said he was alarmed when he heard recent talks about abortion in Samoa.

Abortion is highest form of treason one commits against a human life and is a disloyalty to God our creator, Ma’ilata said.

“I’ve heard not long ago that Tuila’epa Sa’ilele has slammed the door shut on a call to legalise abortion in Samoa,” he said.

“As a father, abortion is an evil act to our society, and that’s one point I would like to share to Stui and his government.”

Ma’ilata said abortion was not the answer to problems.

“I don’t believe in abortion because it’s murder, we are not the ones to decide whether the person that a woman gives birth to should live or die,” he said.

“Some people believe that it’s a woman’s body and it’s her choice and she should be able to decide whether or not she wants the baby.”

“Abortion is not God’s way, many believe that women have the freedom to choose abortion, I mean choosing death is not our role but God himself.”

Ma’ilata also has a soft spot  and understands why people resort to abortion.

“It could be because of rape, teen pregnancy or a sickness the mother may have and they believe that abortion is a way of dealing with their problems.”

However, he has a simple message for young girls and mothers.

“If you don’t want a child, you shouldn’t have sex at a young age because it’s not always safe. We have heaps of seminars and ads on newspapers, signboards everywhere to alert young girls’ of the problems associated with teenage pregnancies.”

“We also must understand that abortion can result in getting ill, physical damage to your body and it can stop you from having a child again or even can cause death.”

There are many other things mothers and young girls can do to prevent abortion, he adds.

“We have organisations like Fa’ataua o le Ola and others that you can talk to for help and consultations.”

“Remember that babies don’t have a choice in your womb, they don’t have a say.”

“Young women and sometimes even older women don’t realize that you’re taking away an innocent life that didn’t even ask to be here. That’s murder!”

“Always try to put yourself in the baby’s shoes,” Ma’ilata said.
