Trying to decide between eating the pineapple or the pawpaw explained the deep furrowed expressions on Rhea and Malte of Germany who were wanting to try some of the tropical fruits on display at the Agriculture and food fair.

Turning their attention to us instead while they mulled over their decision, Dear Tourist learned that Rhea and Malte were from Germany and Rhea shared with us the reasons that led them to our sunny shores on the other side of the hemisphere,

“we had a book of all of the world and every country is described in it and we found Samoa” said Rhea, “we never heard of it before we must admit but it sounded so beautiful and it looked like a paradise. Looks like no one has problems here – it sounded really, really good so we decided to come here.”

The German couple had been taking a tour of the cultural village at the S.T.A.  centre when they came over to the government grounds to check out the lively local fare. Dear tourist asked what especially they liked about the cultural village tour,

“It was interesting, very interesting.” Rhea said,  “especially how they make the coconut milk and how they pressed it out – it was very good. I did try some of it because they did it right in front of me!” she laughed.

The travelling couple mentioned that what really stood out for them was the warmness of the locals that they didn’t anticipate and that sometimes there were some funny observations.

“The people are very friendly.” Said Malte, “we are not sure why the people ask us all the time for a taxi, I’m not sure if it’s because we are maybe looking like very lost people. But they are very, very friendly and everybody is helpful.”

For Rhea the family orientated nature of Samoa and her people was something that she has never experienced before and will probably never forget, “even though it’s a different culture, you feel as if you have come home.” She said, “we are staying at Olivia’s accommodation, it is also very friendly and it’s like a family and we don’t feel as if we are tourists when we are staying there. The atmosphere is very chilled and it’s so nice.”
