The proposed Police Academy will be one of the projects funded by the $40million (¥100,000,000) agreement of Economic and Technical Cooperation signed by Samoa and the People’s Republic of China yesterday.

Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi and Ambassador of China to Samoa, Wang Xuefeng inked the deal in the Prime Minister’s office.

The Police Academy is part of the government’s push to raise the standard of policing in the country.

It was not clear what other projects will be funded under the signed agreement aimed to “further develop the friendly relations, economic and technical cooperation between the two countries.”

Tuilaepa thanked the government of China for their continuous support in various areas such as political relations, tourism, education, trade and investment as well as technical assistance.

He recalled that Samoa was one of the first Pacific Island countries to establish diplomatic relations with China in 1975.

“The signing of agreement this morning is yet another positive step to strengthening economic partnership between Samoa and China,” he added.

Mr. Xuefeng said the agreement signals a strong mutual support between the two countries.

“Chinese government will continue to support and help the Samoa government in developing economy improving livelihood of the people of Samoa and bringing more tangible benefits to people of two countries,” said the Ambassador.

“After the signing of  the agreement what we should do is to implement as soon as possible the projects agreed upon by both sides such as the Academy of Police.

“Recently during the meeting with Prime Minister I had exchanged the views on the progress of implementation of the projects.

“Now the Chinese Embassy is working with concerned department of government regarding feasibility study and some other preparation work.”
