There’s a widely held belief that poverty does exist in Samoa.

But how come most of our people from rural areas are experiencing poor home qualities?

That is an issue questioned by a 25-year-old mother, Temukisa Kelekolio from the village of Satapuala.

Village Voice witnessed yesterday the poor quality of Temukisa’s home, where the first thing that catches your eye when you enter is the ground or the soil as the floor of the house.

As we faced a week of rainy weather safe in our homes, Temukisa and her family we’re trying to keep their house clean from being dirty but it was a course of action that was impossible to get it done considering the condition of their home.

“I really find the cost of living very expensive and that’s like something that we cannot seem to get away from.

“I ask myself everyday, ‘when can we actually afford to develop our home?’

“Our home is barely shelter when we face bad weather and that is why we need a change in our home situation.

“For instance, our house is not cemented or anything. We can’t afford to change that.

“Our floor is basically the ground and we lay old carpets or whatever we can find just to cover the soil and trust me it’s not something pretty.

Temukisa said that her husband, a fisherman, sells fish just to earn money for them to get by especially developing their home situation for they have three little kids to think about.

“I always encourage my husband to look for another job because I think about how life goes on and that my children need a comfortable home as they are growing up.

“That’s’ why my husband has been working hard because he’s trying to create a better life for us, but the money from the fish he’s selling, is never enough for everything that we need.

“I know he’s trying to find a job and I don’t blame him for taking too long because let’s face it, trying to get any job nowadays is difficult.

“We, as parents want what’s best for our families, our children and that’s why we just want to ask for some help with our home to be cemented or getting a proper floor.

“That is the only request that I want to put out there.”

This mother really needs help with her home so if you want to lend a helping hand, please contact her through 7204560.
