Teachers learn new skills and share experiences

A training for teachers in Year 1, 2 and 3 was held at the E.F.K.S. hall this week.

The training is part of an effort by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture to target close to 1700 teachers for primary, 800 teachers for secondary and 800 school principals to upskill them.

Teacher, Wayne Wayne Uluola, from Aele Primary School was among the participants.

He said the training was an excellent way to learn from others.

“When we talk about early childhood education then we have to focus more on young children in classrooms,” he said.

“Yes, we all know that the child’s early years lay the foundation for all that is to come their way in education.

“For today, we’ve learnt a lot, these new methods and ideas create another pathway  for us and what we believe is that the more we learn from here the more the children will learn.” 

Wayne said the training was refreshing.

“What we need to do, is to absorb whatever we learn in this training, we have to take in classrooms and work on it.

 “For good early education play a critical role during this time of vast technology in education.

“We are lucky to get support in these new teaching methods by some senior teachers in education, who are great at that.

Another teacher, Mapuitiga Fetaui from Faleasi’u Primary School said the training also involves developing work and lessons planned to motivate children.

“Having the opportunity to develop our skills in so many ways is a dream come true to many of us here,” Mapuitiga said.

“Like for example, the presentation of guided reading programs or activities that we can use to ensure student’s constant attention during lessons.

“As early-years teachers, we are the ones that nurture young children at their young age before they go further in education. The more we learn the more we know.”

The targeted areas being covered include:

• Literacy and Numeracy

• Strategies for effective teaching and learning

• Mental Strategies for Mathematics

• Feedback sessions on SSC & SSLC results for Year 12 & Year 13 Teachers

• Strategies to target SSC & SSLC poor results

• Leadership Induction for New Principals (1-5 years of experience)

The focus is primarily on the teaching and learning with a session run for School Principals on effective leadership to assist school management personnel who need assistance.
