A small house where the trash is stored at the old Yazaki Building at Vaitele caught fire yesterday afternoon. But thanks to the quick response by the Fire and Emergency Services Authority, they were able to eliminate the fire before it spread.

The Australian owner of a helicopter which the Ministry of Revenue plans to auction owes the Government of Samoa outstanding taxes. The impounded aircraft will not be released to the owner until the import goods and services tax (G.S.T.) payable on the helicopter is settled in full.

The Public Service Commission (P.S.C.) has terminated the services of the Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Works, Transport and Infrastructure (M.W.T.I.), Afamasaga Su’a Pou Onesemo. The decision was confirmed yesterday by the Minister of M.W.T.I., Papali’i Niko Lee Hang, during an interview with the Samoa Observer.

World Bank gives $95 million grant

The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors has approved a US$35.75 million (T$95.09m) grant to improve the climate resilience of Samoa’s road network and facilitate a rapid response in the event of a natural disaster. Thousands of residents on Samoa’s two main islands, Upolu and Savai’i, will benefit directly from this investment.

The Ministry of Revenue and an Australian aviation company are in a tussle over the ownership of a multimillion-tala helicopter the Customs had planned to auction. The helicopter made headlines in Samoa in early 2016 when the newly incorporated firm back then, Samoa Helicopters Company, won the backing of the Government to set up Samoa’s first medical evacuation and search and rescue operation.
