WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — South Africa has called up flanker Willem Alberts as a replacement for injured lock Lood de Jager ahead of its next Rugby Championship test against New Zealand.

De Jager suffered a knee injury during the Springboks' 23-17 loss to Australia in Brisbane on Saturday and is likely to be out of action for two weeks. Additional injuries to backrowers Siya Kolisi and Sikhumbuzo Notshe prompted South Africa to summon the versatile Alberts as a loose forward replacement rather than to seek a lock.

A 38-test veteran who currently plays in France for Stade Francais, Alberts will join the Springboks on Monday ahead of Saturday's test in Christchurch.

Meanwhile, flanker Sam Cane suffered a hamstring injury during the All Blacks' 57-22 win over Argentina on Saturday and is expected to be sidelined for up to six weeks.
