Don’t give up on your aspirations, youths told

Young people have been encouraged not to give up on their dreams.

But to achieve those dreams, creating a safe space for youths to engage in activities relating to their diverse needs and interests and allowing them to participate in the decision-making process is important.

The point was highlighted by the United Nations Resident Coordinator/United Nations Development Resident Representative, Simona Marinescu, during the closing of the Youth Week on Friday.

Ms. Marinescu commended the Government, especially the Ministry of Women Community and Social Development (M.W.C.S.D.) for supporting the young people of Samoa.

“I would like to reiterate the importance of our partnership with you under the Youth Employment Programme and commend you on the great work you do across the community,” she said.

“As we go this week to celebrate the International Youth Day and Fathers’ Day, we must never forget our mandate to ensure no one is left behind. The theme for this year’s International Youth Day ‘Safe Spaces for Youth’, has been adopted in consultations with the Youth Assembly and together with our partners, we contextualized for the Youth/Business Expo in Samoa.”

“Your responsibility is to never stop learning and never give up on your aspirations, and aim high,” she added.

Minister for Women, Community and Social Development Faimalotoa Kika Iemaima Stowers said creating a safe space for all is about the future.

“We have shown this week, that with such a space, people were able to sell and buy, information was shared and gifts were given away. This is all possible because of you as government cannot do much without you.”

“We therefore acknowledge with sincere gratitude the United Nations family in Samoa, especially United Nations Development Programme (U.N.D.P.), International Labour Organization (I.L.O.), United Nations Fund for Population Activities (U.N.F.P.A.) and Food and Agriculture Organization (F.A.O.) for youth farmers in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (M.A.F.) and Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (S.R.O.S.), as well as DFAT Australia.”

“Thank you also to Samoa Youth Climate in Action Network, the Samoa Stationery and Books (S.S.A.B.), Bluesky Samoa and all our partners and stakeholders.”
