Tremors shake Samoa and Fiji

Two earthquakes occurred in the Samoa and Fiji regions early yesterday morning. At 5:32am, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake occurred at a depth of 59 kilometres in the Samoa region.

It was 192km southwest from Apia in Samoa, 485km northwest from Alofi in Niue and 1017km east-northeast from Suva.

The Mineral Resources Department’s Seismology Unit said it was a moderate size earthquake with intermediate depth source location.

At 6:29am, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake occurred at a depth of 10km in the Fiji region.

It was 391km east from Labasa, 397km south-southwest from Utufua in Wallis and Futuna, and 510km northeast from Suva.

The Seismology Unit said it was a moderate size earthquake with shallow depth source location.

The two earthquakes did not pose any tsunami threat to Fiji.

Meanwhile, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Tonga region at a depth of 104km at 10:52pm yesterday.
