Depending on the fruit of the work of your hands is better than working for someone else.

While most young people hunt for jobs, Neta Tuala from Safa’ato’a Lefaga, holds a different view.

 “Having no job is not the end of the world,” she said.

“You can always turn to your plantation to make a living.” 

She knows what she is talking about.

“My husband and I make the most of our time in our plantation to care for our family,” she told the Village Voice.

 “This is what we do for living. You see, we sold nine baskets of taro already and I tell you it’s good money.” 

“I know some people don’t want to go to the plantation because of hard work but to be honest taro and banana is the easiest way to earn money nowadays.”

 “The money from our plantation takes care of all our expenses.”

Neta understands that the biggest issue in Samoa is the lack of jobs.

 “I spend most of the time looking for a job unfortunately this is where it got me.” 

“But I guess on the other side, it gives a lot of people more free time to help out within our families. We can go and make use of the land by planting crops to eat and to sell.” 

 “A lot of people waste their free time but my only advice is to make good use of your time by doing something useful for the wellbeing of your family like planting some taros.”

Neta is a mother of two.
