Sad state of my beloved Samoa

Dear Editor,

I’m looking at the pictures of the H.R.P.P ava ceremony.

What happened to our tradition of matais sitting on the floor during the ava ceremony?

My relatives visited Samoa from the US recently. They were told to sit on chairs but, they objected due to their respect for our cultural and tradition.

These photos and videos of the ava ceremony at the H.R.P.P demonstrate where our future is heading with so called leaders of our country sitting.

Or perhaps most people of this party are so large that they can’t sit on the floor and fold those legs.

Our elected leaders are sitting high on chairs as if they are from a foreign country. Even foreigners have respected our traditions during an ava ceremony. Especially if its in a home or hall.

Outdoors I can understand to some degree.

This is the new reality for us. Our leaders gets to sit on a high perch while the rest of our people are struggling picking up anything they throw away.

Sad state of my Beloved Samoa.
