More than 30 people last week completed a Samoa Social Welfare Diabetes Education programme.

This project by the Samoa Social Welfare was interestingly called, “Funky, Healthy Lifestyle Free Diabetes Samoa”.

The programme ran for three consecutive days with an Australian registered nurse, Alexis Carroll who specializes in diabetes, as the training coordinator.

The C.E.O. Leaula Theresa V.H. Asiata of the  Samoa Social Welfare, said a partnership with the Latter Days Saint Welfare Samoa, made this diabetes education possible.

“Samoan people are vulnerable to diabetes and it is really good to get them to understand through awareness education how to counter this disease.

“This diabetes education programme was made possible with the assistance of Latter Days Saint Welfare Samoa as part of their own outreach programmes to communities and youth.

“The education involves communities, youth and offenders.

“The main motive was to let the youths, offenders and community people understand and be aware of diabetes itself so they can able to share within their local circles.”

Ms. Carroll said it was a good learning experience to run the workshop from her level of education and knowledge to the young people who have diabetes in Samoa.

She added she was hoping the participants will be able teach others

“I had a great experience running this workshop here and I am hoping that the graduates will be able to pass on the knowledge to their families and their local communities on diabetes awareness.”

One graduate said he was grateful for the programme and he was looking forward to sharing what he had learned.

“The programme was really important and I am thankful to be part of it. Samoans’ weakness is food and this education programme has taught me something really good about your diet.”
