Hard working mothers create legacy

The year that has been is slowly but surely winding down. It’s a time where different groups and organisations are taking to pause, reflect on the challenges, blessings and what has been achieved.

For the Women’s Committee of the village of Afega, that opportunity was yesterday. Their last activity for the year was not only a celebration; it was an opportunity to add value to their families with the inspection for home ware items to ensure their homes are well equipped.

Speaking on behalf of the Committee, Iupita Eteuati, said yesterday was an opportunity to gather to give thanks.

“We have this activity every year and it is organized and led by our President, Muliagatele Jean Malifa,” said Mrs. Eteuati.

“This inspection is mainly for us mothers to prepare our homes when we host guests during the holidays. It also helps motivate us as mothers to make sure that we have all the things we need at home.”

“Things like mats (falalili’i), pillows, sheets, and other home ware items. We inspect different items every year.”

“This is also a chance for us to gather together and have a good laugh looking back to all the things we achieved so far, and also talk about ways that we can do to improve and strengthen our committee.”

But there is more to it.

“This is also the chance for us, the elders to talk and share with the young ones on how to improve their roles and motivate them to continue doing the good work they do at home,” she said.

“Mothers play a vital role in our societies and our families. So we can share and learn new things from other’s experiences and help us improve.”

“Not only that, but this is also a chance for us to strengthen our relationship, moving forward. We all know that men rely on us for most of the things not only within our families but also our villages.”

“So if we as women stand and work together, then we can achieve great things.”

Mrs. Eteuati acknowledged the leadership of their President.

“Our President encourages us to do our job well as mothers,” she said.

“She also helps the other women and make sure that they have enough for the inspections.”

“But we don’t force the women to participate; there’s no need to do that. That’s why we also don’t penalise anyone who doesn’t participate.”

“They are used to it because they know how useful the inspections are for their families. Most of us don’t usually think about buying these things for our homes. But these inspections allow us to be well prepared for any occasion or whenever we host guests.”

“So everyone is motivated to have their inspections ready for this. And it’s one of the things we look forward to every year.”

The celebration continued at the St. Therese Accommodation at Le’auva’a where all the mothers had the chance to relax, enjoy and celebrate all the hard work for this year.
