Thank God for plantations

The humble plantation is part of Samoan life.

Without it, many families would be struggling.

Lua Li’itia from the Village of Leauva’a made this comment while referring to the expensive cost of living and the obstacles associated with this issue.

“The cost of living is not getting any cheaper by just sitting and complaining, we must stand up and work to help alleviate this problem,” the 52-year-old father of three said.

Mr. Li’itia believes working hard is the only solution to the high cost of living.

Speaking to the Village Voice team yesterday morning, Mr. Li’itia emphasized the struggles families in Samoa faced.

“I think in Samoa right now life is not getting easier anymore at all, given the high cost of living.

“Luckily we have a small family but still we are struggling most of the time in terms of daily living, because my wife is the only person working for the whole family while I’m responsible for working on our plantation.”

Mr. Li’itia added his family depended on his plantation.

“Even though my wife works, she does not make that much money.

“Her salary mainly goes to the children’s school, food and paying our bills.”

Mr. Li’itia said he did not want to sit around and complain.

“The rich people will never care if we struggle and we need to stand up and look for our ways to make money especially using our resources.

“I know we have plantations so let’s plant more crops because complaining will not help us at all.”

Mr. Li’itia added farming was also a form of exercise.

“People are dying at a young age because of stress, so that’s why it is better to go work the plantation not only to get food but also to exercise as well.”
