What would have been great
Re: Manu Samoa Sevens coach
It would have been great if you had called the former coach to clear up some inconsistencies that you reported. There has been no doubt that there was division within the team perhaps not in personalities but in mentality amongst players, some respected the coach and others perhaps felt sorry for the assistant coach.
All the players testified of McGrath‘s respect for our culture but the manager seemed to indicate the opposite. McGrath believed he had all the backing of the players while Brian saw it otherwise. Disciplinary according to Lima was non existent, no input from McGrath on this issue.
How did coach McGrath came into possession of an alleged support letter written by Mr. Luke Stephenson? Was it handed to him? and if so, by whom?
Brian Lima may have been truly well known, but Mr. McGrath was the coach, it wasn’t a popularity contest. Some great coaches never played the game that they coach in, some were players but not superstars yet great as coaches. Some superstar players are never coaches, they aren’t good at it.
But you are correct, the head coach should pick his own assistant coaches. that way he doesn’t have to feel threatened by someone else’s experience and reputation as a player, where his focus will be divided in keeping the players from leaning towards the assistant coach and instilling a winning formula.
