BOUQUETS AND NOW BRICKBATS

After glowing compliments were handed out during the special day recognizing the public sector recently, there are a few not-so-wonderful comments that need to be made.

It is totally inexcusable for large sums of money allocated to Authorities, Ministries and Government Departments to simply sit there unused until it is in danger of being returned to the donors and never again offered.

In other instances of less-than dynamic organizations and poor leadership, sums of money have been quickly and thoughtlessly spent to simply ensure that the funding will continue.

Recent examples of this was the C.E.O. of an Authority sitting upon one million tala with only a year to go before said funding would disappear forever.

Despite getting a bollocking from Cabinet Ministers, that was the only response.

Then there is a Ministry which quickly pushed through a project at the last minute to spend the money before due date.

Another Government Department prefers to have a competitive approach to funding with different divisions fighting over funding and not sharing information in a bid to ensure the funding goes to their division alone.

All public servants should spend a few years in the private sector to learn the value of money when your job actually depends upon the business you are in being successful.
