Sometimes you have to make tough decisions.

For 20-year-old Junior Junior from Tanugamananono, one of the toughest decisions he had to make was to quit his job.

“I quit my job not long ago,” he said. “The reason I quit my job is because my parents wanted me to stay home (to look after them).

“I figured that looking at my parents making sure of their wellbeing is what’s important so I decided to stay home.”

He went on to say that his other siblings provide for his family financially.

“I thank God because sometimes we do our own thing but he has the better answer for us.

“I’d rather see my parents happy and healthy than finding a job and seeing them sad.”

At home, he’s his own boss.

“I can spend time with my parents, when I have spare time I can go and play rugby, and also I can have a rest at anytime I want after doing chores at home.”

While it is not everyone’s path, Junior said there are blessings that come with it.

“The blessings from our parents is very important,” he said.

“Our role is to obey and do what they want.

“This is just normal routine for us so called ‘talavou’ in Samoa. I think that’s why Samoa is different from other countries. We as young people feel responsible for our adults.”

Away from his parents, Junior said the cost of living is expensive.

He believes the government should step in to cushion the blows.

But he is not holding his breath.

“The thing is if we wait for the government to help us, it will take ages,” he said.

“But looking for opportunities to occupy our time at home, churches, villages will help us to make it through (life).

“Yes, we’re all struggling but we need to find a way, whatever God has given you this time, a talent, make good use of it. Then everything will fall into place bit by bit.”
