Yesterday was the start of the Squash Business House Tournament.

Eight companies have come on board in what has been dubbed the largest turnout out thus far.

Tournament Coordinator, Ivan Ah Liki said, “This is one of the best turnouts we’ve had in close to five years.  It’s really great; we’ve got 45 people playing.”

Mr. Ah Liki says the turnout is an indicator of the growing interest of the sport in Samoa.

“It’s promising to see the beginners,” he said.

“Some of these people play touch and when it rains, they come and play squash because they can’t play touch.”

The proceeds from this tournament will enable a team to travel to Tahiti later in the year.

“The proceeds will be going to fund our Men’s team and hopefully a Women’s team to for the Oceania Championships in September. We’re looking at taking five men and one or two women,” Mr. Ah Liki explained.

“Ball parking it would be $20,000 for airfares, accommodation and pocket money.”

The tournament will continue for five weeks.

The teams taking part are Apia Concrete Products, Taula Beverage, Juliana Rentals, Federal Pacific, Petroleum Product Supplies, Samoa Finance Co. Limited, Bluebird Lumber and Hardware and Niu Voka Paoa.
