Savai’i life easier because Upolu is all about money

Life in Savai’i can never be compared to life in Upolu.

Su Sione from Satupaitea knows this.

Having relocated to Falelauniu, he says it’s easier and simpler to survive in Savai’i.

“There’s no hardship there, no struggle but I think the only problem is the lack of money,” Su Sione told the Village Voice.

The 68-year-old said hardship means different things to different people.

“If we don’t work, we have no money. We can’t just keep depending on our children overseas supporting us financially; we should also work to earn our own living.”

Su Sione said opportunities to earn income are very limited in Savai’i.

“We have a lot of land to work on, start a plantation and a vegetable garden. Those are the things we know we can sell and get money from in Savai’i.

But things are different here in Upolu.

“We don’t have much land in Upolu,” he said.

“For us we haven’t finished paying off the land we are living on. Everything here is about money.”

It’s like living overseas.

“Everything is paid for, the water bills, the electricity, the food and everything.”

But Su doesn’t believe in the dependency mentality. He said we should work harder to overcome the challenges.
