SAO PAULO (AP) — Sao Paulo state prosecutors say they filed money laundering and misrepresentation charges against former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva because of evidence he and his family unduly benefited from a real estate scheme that adversely affected thousands of families.

Lead prosecutor Cassio Conserino told journalists at a news conference Thursday it was clear that a triplex beachfront apartment at the center of the case was meant for the Silva family.

Silva has denied any wrongdoing and said he is not the owner of the apartment, in the coastal city of Guaruja.

The state public prosecutors' office brought the charges Wednesday, and a judge must now decide whether to accept them.

Conserino said he had no idea when that might happen, suggesting it might take some time.
