The Ministry of Police celebrated the International Women’s Day 2016, devoted to the theme “Weaving Our Way Forward”.

This is the second year this event has been hosted by the Samoa Police Women Advisory Network (W.A.N) and commemorated in the Ministry.

The Commissioner of Police, Afioga Fuiavailili Egon Keil, delivered the keynote address.

He acknowledged the strong contribution of women in the police force and continues to give his support for the empowerment and advancement of women to fulfill their potential and enjoy equal recognition in the Samoa Police Service.

He is determined to envisage a more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient police organization with Women essential to this vision.

Three guest speakers were invited to present and give inspirational and motivating presentations.

1) Angelina Wilkinson, who is the Charged’ Affaires of the United States Embassy.

2) Vaimasenu’u Zita Martel, the French Consul in Samoa.

3) Pastor Alesi Unoi from Peace Chapel.

These speakers advised the members of the Samoa Police Women Advisory Network to:

- Always remember, never to sweat the small stuff and laugh with others, not at others.

- There are two things that hold women back – that is fear and lack of focus, women are gifted and need to ‘weave together’ to support each other in the community.

- Seize the moment; uphold the law and we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.

In attendance was the High Commissioner of Australia, Sue Langford, who spoke briefly on the role of the Australian Government in Samoa and its support for women in a range of projects.

Also in attendance was Tafatoa Sam Fruean, representative from the Samoa Victim Support Group which the Samoan Police Women’s Advisory Network is raising funds and donations for as part of their International Women’s Day 2016 activity.

The day’s programme culminated with a fun run/walk along the beach road sea wall to raise awareness and funds for the Samoa Victims Support Group.
