We need to have a positive attitude and mind-set so that we can see the opportunity in every difficulty we face in life. 

Ask 45-year-old Ulimasao Valeli from Pu’apu’a, Savai’i and he will explain the importance of being optimistic.

“I believe the key to getting by every day is having a good and positive attitude,” Ulimasao said.

The Village Voice team met him while on-duty at the Amoa Resort in Savai’i yesterday morning.

“This is me every day, enjoying every day of my life and I come to work every morning,” he said.

And through proper budgeting, he is able to prioritise the essential needs of his family and meet all the required obligations by the church and village.

 “My salary is not that much but at least I’m happy and have something in my hand every week to give back to my family,” Ulimasao said.

“We make little but if we manage what we have wisely, then we will have enough and that’s the mentality that we should all have when we look at the high cost of living.

“For your information, I am the only one who provides for my family financially, we have a plantation, pigs, but I know Samoa is not about anything like that these days because money always does the talking.”

He said life was getting tougher every day.

“That’s why no matter how far I live, I always try to come to work every day,” said Ulimasao.

“I want to make sure to always be on time and to put in all my effort and abilities in what I’m doing because there are people who rely on me.

“The lack of job opportunities in Savai’i is something not to question because we all know what’s happening to both islands, there are no jobs opportunities.

“But when you’re offered a job, then there you are; you have to make good use of it and be honest with yourself.”  

He believes that whatever opportunities come our way, we have to hold onto to them whole-heartedly.

“When we get little or a lot, it’s always good to be positive and be happy about it, we need to walk around with a satisfied heart,” Ulimasao said.

“My family is doing very well at the moment and we don’t go through any problems except money problems.

Ulimasao advises youths to never give up.

“My message to all the youth is don’t waste time and serve your family to the best of your ability,” he said.

“Be honest with your work and chores, and serve your family, village and church.”
