TRAGIC END: The driver of this vehicle has died.

A collision between a bus and a car at Tuana’i last Friday has claimed one life.

This was confirmed by the Police Media Officer, Su’a Lemamea Tiumalu, yesterday.

The deceased man is the 24-year-old driver of one of the vehicle involved in the collision.

“The driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries but he later died due to the seriousness of the injuries,” he said.

The Police are investigating.

The Beautiful A’ana bus was heading from Apia towards Manono when the incident occurred.

“From what we’ve found, one of the vehicles overtook another vehicle at a curve while the bus was coming the opposite direction,” he said.

“We suspect that that’s what might have caused the incident but we are still continuing our investigation.”

Su’a added that the bus driver was not at fault.

Speed is also suspected, he said. A passenger on the Manono bus, Ielu Elia, recalled what happened.

“One car was trying to overtake the one in front of them when it saw that the bus was coming towards them…it was at that time that our bus driver tried to pull over to the side of the road but it was too late.

“The speeding car was going too fast then it crashed into the back of our bus taking off the wheels.”

According to Mr. Elia some of the passengers received minor injuries and were not taken to the hospital.

“It was the passengers in the speeding car that were rushed to the hospital.”

A villager of Tuanai, Saimoli Tavui was one of the first people at the scene.

Mr. Tavui who lives across from where the accident happened said the collision happened so quickly. He was sitting in his house when he heard a loud bang and his children called to him that there was an accident.

“I came down here and saw that one of the cars has swirled off the road with major damages,” he said.
