Trade is top of the agenda in Samoa this week as the country hosts a series of Regional Trade Officials meetings, starting today at the Tanoa Tusitala Hotel Conference Centre.

The meetings are organised by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.

The meetings include the Pacific Island Countries Trade Agreement (P.I.C.T.A.) Rules of Origin Committee (R.O.C.).

The R.O.C. members are Fiji, Niue, Samoa, Tuvalu and Vanuatu and will consider possible modifications of the rules of origin with recommendations to be discussed at the P.I.C.T.A. Trade Officials meeting today.

The Pacific A.C.P. (P.A.C.P.) Leaders in September 2017 mandated the Secretariat to undertake a review of the P.I.C.T.A. rules of origin.

The P.A.C.P. Trade Officials’ meeting will be held this morning.

The meeting agenda include the Economic Partnership Agreement with the E.U., the trade pillar of the Post-Cotonou negotiations and Brexit implications on trade.

The Forum Trade Officials will meet tomorrow and will consider regional trade integration, the Pacific Aid for Trade Strategy, the Pacific Trade & Invest network, P.A.C.E.R. Plus and W.T.O. related matters.

The Forum Trade Officials Meeting will be officially opened by the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Labour, Lautafi Fio Selafi Purcell.

Funded and organised by Australia and New Zealand, P.A.C.E.R. Plus signatories are meeting on the 12-13 July 2018.

Senior trade officials of P.A.C.E.R. Plus signatory countries will be updated on the P.A.C.E.R. Plus Readiness Package and the programmes that will be delivered by U.N.C.T.A.D. on the Implementation of Transparency Obligations; P.F.T.A.C. for Revenue Reform; the Oceania Customs Organisation (O.C.O.) for the Implementation of HS 2017 and Customs Provisions and A.E.C.O.M. for the design of the P.A.C.E.R.
