Living conditions worry mother

For seven years, Mu Frietton has struggled without proper water supply.

The unemployed mother of nine, from Tanugamalala, faces so many difficulties, especially living in a rundown house with 10 people who don’t work.

She said there is barely any space inside the house for all of them.

Every year during special occasions such as Mother’s Day, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren cannot spend the night with them because of their living conditions.

She shared with the Village Voice team that happiness is something she hopes for in every new day.

“Most of the children now have their own families to look after and they don’t have jobs that pay them much. Most of the time they usually come here and it is not spacious. They usually come during special occasions such as Christmas times, father’s day, mother’s day, any significant event.

“I usually tell my children that they cannot stay because there is no space and also no water. There is no water supply. We rely on the tank and what happens is that when it does not rain then there is no water.

“We mostly pay money to get our water tank filled but we barely have enough for everyone,” said the 68-year-old.

She is seeking assistance to upgrade their house and improve their home for the sake of her grandchildren, which is her main concern.

“In 2017 we received a water tank and for a place like this that we live in, we really need water supply because we are far away from people and there are no neighbours,” Mrs. Frietton said.

“I have pleaded for a water tank for a very long time because when we arrived here in 2011, it was the church that helped us out.

“Up until now, there is no steady water supply here, so when we run out of water from the tank, we would have to spend money.”

Mrs. Frietton shared her many worries, including her youngest daughter who lives with them and is expecting a baby soon.

“My pregnant daughter is now living here because her husband is not in the country. The husband will arrive in September this year, but she is due in June. This is her first child.

“So we really need to fix our house properly, but there is nothing that we could do about it because we don’t have the money for it.”
