When experience becomes your teacher

Whether you’re a town dweller or a villager, if you find something you’re passionate about then the sky is your only limit.

That’s the view of Simone Tulusi, from the village of Solosolo.

He explains that it is very important that you find something you love doing and focus on making a living out of it.

Aged 23, Simone’s passion is creating artistic pieces of stencils for clothing designs. He explains that selling stencil pieces are great because he makes a living doing something he has always loved.

Although his business is still in its infancy stage, Simone says he will do his best to develop it further.

“Right now, I am trying to develop my business in making stencils for printing,” he told the Village Voice.

“I have been doing this business for about four years now and it’s something I have a passion for. I feel that this is my future and I will stick to what I love for as long as possible.

“I didn’t take any classes in the arts and I wasn’t taught by anyone else. As I grew up, I picked bits and pieces of how things work and experience became my teacher.

“This business of mine helps out my family quite a bit.”

Possibly making close to $1000 a week, Simone says that business is not that bad. He also urges all the other youths of Samoa to take his lead and find something they have a passion for.

“With this business I can possibly make close to $1000 a week,” he said.

“It all depends on my customers really, if many people buy my art work then I make a lot but there are times when sales are very low. What I make varies.

“I have noticed a lot of those my age just wasting time instead of looking for something they are passionate about and then making a living out of it.

“You can make a real living if you use your strength and knowledge wisely, your family won’t get anything with you wasting your time.

“So I urge all the youths of Samoa to look for something you love doing and then focus on that.”

Asked about life in Samoa, Simone says it’s all great and all but there are times when it’s hard to find money for daily needs.

“Life in this country is great,” he began.

“It’s difficult at times but as we go along, we are able to get by every day. Every day it’s the same, we just try to search for money so to take care of our families.

“There are so many things that need to be done for us Samoan people and so many obligations. That’s why we are always searching for money.”

But all in all, Simone says that Samoa is just amazing.

“Generally speaking, Samoa is very peaceful,” he said.

“I wouldn’t see anywhere else as home for me; the peacefulness, the simple lifestyle, everything about Samoa is just great and I love it.

“Aside from the issue of trying to look for money to take care of our family with, I love this country.”
