Moana Cable holds great promise

A joint initiative between undersea cable company, Alcatel – Lucent Submarine Networks and Bluesky Pacific Group could see Samoa’s internet accessibility increase massively as soon as 2018 with the construction of the Moana Cable System.

Covering 9,700km of the Pacific, the cable will be the first of it’s kind; utilising the latest 200Gb/s transmission technology that will connect New Zealand and Hawaii, with the cable’s capacity allowing for islands across the Pacific to connect; from Samoa to the Cook Islands.

The increased connectivity of Samoa and other Pacific islands to the international global business market through higher quality and more readily available internet will only serve to benefit the country in more ways than one.

Bluesky Pacific Group C.E.O, Aoe’e Aldofo Montenegro, told Fibre Systems that the Pacific must tap into the digital highway to stay connected to the rest of the world.

“For the Pacific islands, it is important to tap into a digital highway between the larger markets to gain the benefit of economies of scale,” he said.

“Cost effective and reliable telecommunications bring significant benefits to education, commercial, medical and governmental activities and play a vital role in economic and social development.”
