Return to your roots

Think a minute…In recent decades millions of people have wanted to know their racial roots and ethnic heritage.

People around the world are mailing their DNA samples to companies like ancestry.com and 23andme.com to learn exactly where their ancestry came from.

Some family reunions are so important that family members travel thousands of miles across oceans to meet their relatives. But before we start tracing our family history, we should be prepared to learn that some of our ancestors were not exactly perfect. Someone said: “Every family tree has a few nuts in it!”

This is definitely true of the entire human family. Every one of us has done many wrong things...all the way back to our very first ancestors, Adam and Eve. But we cannot blame them for anything, since we each have done our share of sinning and not living the way we know we should.

Listen to this popular song entitled Fallen that tells our story well:  “Though I’ve tried, I’ve fallen. I’ve sunk so low, I messed up. We all begin with good intent. When we’re young, we believe we can change ourselves and the past can be undone; but we carry on our back the burdens time always reveals…it’s one wrong step…and there doesn’t seem to be a way back.”

It reminds me of the amazing true story of rock climber Aron Ralston. His survival against all odds was portrayed in the Hollywood film 127 Hours. In April 2003, he was far out in the mountains climbing alone when his arm suddenly became stuck under a huge 800-pound rock.

After 5 days of lying there trapped, Aron knew he would soon die since there was virtually no chance of anyone finding him.  He realized the only way to free himself was to use his pocketknife to cut off his arm that was stuck.

It was his only way out. So he did it. And today Aaron is back home, with only one arm, but thankful he still has his life! Jesus said: “If your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell…And don’t be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both your soul and body in hell.”

It is a fact that we each have lived our own way and not our Maker’s right way. We’ve gotten ourselves lost and stuck in real messes. But Jesus came to free us by paying the total painful penalty for all of our sin and rebellious heart.

He’s the one way back to the only true, good life that exists—since He is the One Who created it. So won’t you ask Jesus to forgive you for living your own way? Only He can enable you to return to your roots and eternal home with Him. His way is the only way you can start enjoying the right, everlasting life in His family that He planned for you to enjoy from the beginning.  Just think a minute…
