“In this age, I see the old Samoan ways fading,” Maria Paono says.

Maria expressed her opinion when the Village Voice caught up with her while she was clearing her garden for village inspection.

Maria is a mother of four. Her three older children live overseas and provide help for them through remittances.

This helps her to get from day to day in terms of basic needs.

“Everything is fine at home. We have electricity, water and food supplies.”

But Maria’s concern revolves around crime and social problems. She is particularly disgusted by the rising number of incest cases.

“Samoa is founded on God and I don’t know why people are responding with such a Satanic behavior,” she said.

“Life back in the day was so different from today.”

The mother believes that global trends are to blame.

“Technology has dominated most of our people’s minds. The movies have played a huge part in influencing people’s behavior.”

Looking to the future, she said there has to be some changes.

“I don’t know what the future holds but people should stay alert and notice these changes,” she said.

“The future belongs to our children and it is something that we parents should be worried about.”

She added that people who are found guilty should be locked away forever.
