Far away from the water supply

One of the most common complaints from people interviewed in the Village Voice series is about water.

Some don’t have water due to unpaid bills, others cannot afford to connect the water pipes, while some don’t have it simply because the government’s water pipes has not reached isolated areas.

Asosa Tineiafi of Nofoalii and Siusega falls into the category of being away from the water supply.

“We don’t have water because we live far away from the village,” he tells Village Voice.

“The inner village is where the water supplies are located and unfortunately, also where they end.

“So being far away from that area, makes us one of the families that mostly depends on water from the rain.”

Mr. Tineiafi said do they have a water tank but there is a limit depending on how much they use it.

“Our water tank that we have now was kindly donated by the Red Cross.

“So we only use it for very important things; such as drinking and preparing food but the rest of the other things we try our best to find water from around the village for that.”

Mr. Tineiafi has eight children, three of which are working overseas.

He is a proud father because his children send money every month to help him out with family obliagtions and daily necessities.

“My eldest is 22 years old, she’s working in New Zealand so it’s a lot of help.”

The children have certainly learned from their father because Mr. Tineiafi is a hardworking person himself.

He’s a security guard and works  seven days a week.

“I don’t have to work, but I want to play a part in the raising of our family.

Also its my duty as head of the family.

“So I guess my life is okay but the only thing that we have an issue with, is not having access to water.”
