Single mother uses resources to make money

Fifty-one-year-old Luaiufi Fata knows the value of making something from what others may consider as nothing.

The single mother of two boys and one girl struggles to raise her kids, but the resources that surround her are what she uses to help her financially.

Selling her handicraft work is also her specialty.

From banana leaves to coconut leaves, Ms. Fata is able to weave baskets and hats. She is also good in floral arrangements.

According to Ms. Fata, she was able to develop her skills in weaving and making handicrafts through the Nofotane project offered by the Samoa Victim Support Group at Faleula.

At first it was interesting and exciting to learn and pursue new crafts but this has now expanded into a small business initiative.

“Now I know how to weave or make Samoan handicrafts like baskets from banana leaves and hats from leaves of coconut trees. “I am very happy because I am able to make money unlike before it was just chores at home and staying home,” Ms. Fata said.

She mentioned her 18-year-old daughter also took part in the training and she has learned to recycle plastic and create purses.

“I sent two of my boys to overseas for a better future and I miss them, but it’s for their own good, but I raised my three-year-old girl without a job.

I looked after my kids with the help of my families overseas, but despite the worries, I still kept my faith in God.”

Ms. Fata encourages women to always work hard and make use of the resources around them to make money.
