Private schools in Samoa took part in the inter-school’s soccer tournament held at JS Blatter Football Complex, Tuana’imato yesterday.

The participating schools were Vaiala Beach School, Robert Louis Stevenson Primary School, Peace Chapel Primary School and Pesega Middle School.

The event aims to promote participation of schools, especially students in this sport.

Eleanor Mcleod, a Year 7 teacher of Vaiala Beach School spoke about the importance of schools’ involvement and taking part in this game.

“It is also an opportunity for private schools to bond and build professional relationships not only between teachers but also athletes,” Mrs. Mcleod said.

She expressed her disappointment for the schools that did not show up.

“But overall, we’re very lucky to work together with the Football Federation of Samoa. Their support is really appreciated,” she said.

Football Federation of Samoa Technical Director, Valerio Raccuglia, said the initiative started in 2011 as a tool to develop football at the grassroots level, by providing youngsters with the opportunity to not only learn and develop their soccer skills, but also participate in a fun, competitive environment while creating relationship with their peers.

“The federation also provides assistance through facilities, officials, referees, equipment such as nets, soccer balls and especially the location,” Mr. Raccuglia said.

“I love watching the kids play, it’s exciting to hear the kids cheering and screaming, win or lose, it’s important for the children to have fun.”

A parent, Aunouska Myer, praised the event.

“It is good for the students to be exposed to football, learning new skills and hopefully win,” she said.

An excited student, Yennor Faau Wong See, expressed her enthusiasm of the event.

“I like the tournament because we can connect with other schools and especially the students, but mostly I’ve learned many skills for soccer,” she said.

Annie Meredith, a teacher at Vaiala Beach School and also one of the main organisers said the prizes comprise of certificates from first place to third place for both boys and girls teams.

The results for the tournament are as follows:
